The Tuskegee University National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care (TUNCBRHC), in collaboration with the New York University Oral Cancer Research for Adolescent and Adult Health Promotion (RAAHP), recently announced its first annual competition for pilot research studies on bioethical issues related to oral cancer in February, with an original grant application due date of April 30, 2002.

Applications are available from TUNCBRHC beginning February 28, 2002 (preferably per email request to Natasha Brown) and will be accepted until April 30, 2002, which is the final submission due date (application procedures and selection process).

Major Accomplishments

The Center administrators and staff are committed to attaining local, national and international recognition for the Tuskegee University Bioethics Center.  The Center Director has worked tirelessly to assure that a core group of African American professionals are represented within the bioethics community. To this end, the Center Director has accomplished the following:
  • Lectured, conducted training and education workshops, sponsored and hosted visiting scholars.
  • Established collaborative relationships with other bioethics centers across the country.
  • Participated in a seminar series hosted by the Howard University Hospital.  The series provided a basis for open discussion on the topic of spirituality and medicine by bringing together the worlds of religious tradition and medicine.
  • Received the "Distinguished Service Award" from the American Society of Bioethics and Humanitarian (October 2001).
Center staff participated in the University of Washington Medical Schools’ Summer Seminar in Health Care Ethics.  This annual one week seminar is an intensive introduction to the concepts, methods, and literature of health care ethics.  The audience included physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, attorneys, teachers and other professionals involved in the care of patients or education of health providers.  This seminar provided participants with skills and information sufficient to enable them to make competent ethical decisions in clinical situations and to assist others in doing so.

Faculty and staff also participated in the intensive bioethics course at Georgetown University.  This program offers bioethics courses designed to address the most challenging topics in health care ethics.  These courses provide the opportunity for participants from different fields and disciplines to come together for a few days to explore the theoretical framework and practical issues of bioethics with a distinguished faculty. In a unique structure, lectures and panel discussions are paired with small group discussions, allowing detailed exploration of issues and personal interaction with faculty and course participants.

In addition to the external activities of the Center and its Director, ongoing campus activities are expanding and enhancing the culture of the Tuskegee University campus.
  • The Center Director has continually identified external short courses, sabbaticals, and exchange programs in bioethics to enhance the continuing education of staff.
  • Faculty and staff have participated in faculty exchange, curriculum development and partnership opportunities through new and long-standing linkages with Tuskegee University.
  • The Center hosted its third annual Commemorative Celebration drawing more then 300 registrants from within the Tuskegee University Community and across the country.
  • The Center conducted a national IRB workshop for development directors and research staff from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).  This effort was conducted collaboration with the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA).
  • Staff attended a two day Professional Development and Planning Meeting at StillWaters Resort & Conference Center.
The Center continues to serve the Tuskegee University Community through the bioethics Reading Group, the Bioethics Special Seminars & Lecture Series, the Wednesday film series, independent research awards, and grants and collaborative working projects among university centers and community based organizations.
